The “outside” part of your air conditioner contains the air-conditioners compressor. It is the heart of your cooling system. It is also quite often misdiagnosed when there are problems with your heating and cooling equipment. The fallback position for most HVAC contractors is that the compressor has gone bad. About one third of the time this is not in fact the problem with your HVAC system.
We want our clients to to be as prepared as possible when trying to figure out if they need air conditioning repair. To that end we want to show you a video and provide you all the necessary information so that you can diagnose the problem yourself. This will hopefully allow you to avoid unnecessarily replacing your air-conditioners compressor. Bear in mind though this is not for the normal do-it-yourselfer.
They either work or they don’t. Compressors that is. The typical home in Las Vegas will have a scroll compressor. There are certainly other types: reciprocating compressor, and rotary compressor.
Scroll compressors are prevalent in newer higher efficiency HVAC equipment. They are durable as well as efficient but they are very expensive to replace.
Some new equipment has the latest innovation called a variable speed compressor. Note that this is the type of compressor available in the most energy efficient Maytag Air Conditioners installed by Silverstate Refrigerator and HVAC.
Our HVAC advisors will be glad to explain the difference in the two types of scroll compressors, but the newest on will be referred to as an inverter drive scroll compressor. Along with being more energy efficient, the initial outlay is higher as well. So beware. If you’re going to live in the house for a long time and if you are experiencing high energy bills, and inverter compressor may be right for you.
If you find that your air conditioner compressor does indeed need to be replaced and the warranty is no longer in effect it may be time to replace the entire unit. Compressors are typically half the price of a new unit.
